| | Your Inner NerdJanuary 9, 2012 - Angelina DicksonOver the past few months, I've been getting more in touch with my inner nerd. Now, I have always been a bit on the nerdy side but it seems that ever since I've been working on writing a comic book, it has come closer to the surface. I think the fact that I have tons of people interested in the same things as I am helps it along, too. I had a "nerd" moment the other day.. I was at my friend Mike's house and we were getting down with some Just Dance 2. He called me "captain" at one point during our conversation and my first thought at hearing the word captain was this scene in a movie called "Fanboys" - a movie about four Star Wars nerds driving from Ohio to California to storm Skywalker Ranch to see Star Wars Episode I before its release. The scene is where they make a stop in Iowa to the "future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk." In this scene the conversation goes like this.... Linus: I was wondering what did Sulu find in Captain Kirk's lavatory. Admiral Seasholtz: Sulu clearly found a standard issue Starfleet Z23 personal refuse device. Linus: I believe it was the Captain's log. THAT was my FIRST thought.. haha! Ya, I am lame. I know. My relationship with Zac has also helped bring out my inner nerd.. but, I have to give credit to Fred Younce and Brent Sobleski who sort of helped kick it off. I started coming into the office here at the Daily Times in the evenings and during that time, I was exposed to "The Twins." I would also have to say Warren Scott was a part of this as well. We would talk about old cartoons, movies and other things continuously. I would tell them how much I hated 80s everything and they would tell me that I was speaking blasphemy. After weeks of this back and forth stuff between what they would talk about, they found out that I was not so different. Eventually, upon their discovery that I had a second job that I work at night as a dispatcher, they dubbed me a superhero. Since then, there have been jokes and stories about this superhero and I got it in my head that I was going to take this idea and run with it. So, I've been working on characters and rough sketches and plots. It's been a lot of fun. I can't wait to see what happens with it. Even if it doesn't sell or isn't popular, I don't really care because getting to this point has been awesome. I will have a finished product in my hands and know that I created it. Brent and Fred have been a big help in giving me ideas for characters and background stories along with their input on my own ideas. My friend Mike and I have workshops where it's pretty much all we talk about. We hash out ideas and write them down so we can keep track. I've never even read a comic book.. this should be interesting.

I write Star Trek fan fiction as a hobby, and have had well-received stories published on Homepageofthedead**** (a site dedicated to the Romero "Living Dead" films), three of original derivation, one dealing with the Punisher facing a small group of undead mobsters. I have a room dedicated to Star Trek, superheroes and Indiana Jones. It also contains my video games, various sci-fi DVDs, and small library of Trek, Star Wars, Tolkien-esqe fantasy and politically-edged, nonfiction tomes. I call it the "Nerd Cave". You are, mostly definitely, not alone. Post a Comment | Blog Links |
